Assignment #11

Oppression is cruel or unjust treatment that is prolonged. The difference between Violent resistance and Nonviolent resistance is that Violent resistance use threat of physical pain or even death to their oppressors, and Nonviolent violent resistance is using peaceful means in which people are not harmed. Agency is the ability to determine the outcome of one’s own life. People should use non-violent resistance cause’ in my research project James Baldwin used non violence because he was getting treated unfairly and he just wrote about all those things in his books. Nonviolent resistance can work for very harmful things. For example, a girl named Malala talked about how she was shot because she wanted an education and she gained agency by peacefully talking about her oppressors in her speech. People can use Nonviolence in wage to for example, it’s an article about The Soweto Uprising doing a boycott because schools were doing things they didn’t need to like forcing education.

First of all, James Baldwin was never the type of person to be violent with someone that’s not what he stood for because he felt it was other ways to handle oppression  which was using Nonviolent resistance. When I analyzed a writing about James Baldwin it talked about how much oppression James was getting it was more of Interpersonal Oppression because others like Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X didn’t really accept him knowing he was a homosexual male. Some really didn’t accept him it was already hard for him to be a African American male but when people knew he was homosexual it just made his life more resistant. I got the information off a site  from a writing on leo.stcloudstate.edu by Robert Pfeffer called ¨The fire This Time.”  This was last updated July 15, 1998. I think this information is reliable because the narrator doesn’t have a reason to be biased against  James Baldwin or anyone named in the writing also, the evidence in the source seems to support what may have really happened. According to the text “the beliefs of its two most popular leaders, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Baldwin was never really accepted by either camp.” This shows that people should use Nonviolent resistance because people are gonna have their opinion if it’s really affecting someone then people can just write about and gain agency like James Baldwin. People can also use this type of resistance by even going on a protest going against the way people feel about homosexuals than threatening the oppressors.

Second of all, No one deserves to get shot in their head for wanting an education this is going to be about a girl named Malala using Nonviolent resistance against her oppressors. Malala only wanted an education she was very ambitious about getting an education but people try to get in the way of that. I’m gonna talk about some information from an excerpt of a speech given by 16 year old Malala Yousafzai to the United Nations General Assembly on July 12 2013. This source provided is reliable because it’s a primary source and the evidence if from the person that actually wrote it. According to the text “I am here to speak for the right of education for every child. I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists. I do not even hate the Talib who shot me.’’ This shows that even if you get shot in your head you can use nonviolent resistance because if people live through something like that and is able to talk about it they should. Others need to hear that story which others will see and can try to do something bout it because they can see that’s really messed up.

After all, People shouldn’t be forced to do something they don’t want to do especially learning a different language because people have their own beliefs. I’m going to be talking about one of the ways resistance was used and that was nonviolent. Students were forced to do things in school that they didn’t want to the main thing was learning a different language. This source is an article from the website called www.findingdulciea.com  titled “Soweto Uprising Begins With Violence During Student Protest.” It was written by Denis Cummings on June 16, 2011. I think the article is reliable because the author doesn’t seem to be biased against anyone, but this is a secondary source which makes it kind of hard to believe. According to source “many students in Soweto, an overwhelmingly black section of Johannesburg, started boycotting school. A group then organized a mass protest for June 16,that morning, thousands of students began walking to the rally’s meeting place, the Orlando soccer stadium.” Based off the text people can use nonviolent resistance against oppressors if it has a new language forced on them because no one should feel forced to do anything, so they can protest against their oppressors by boycotting.

  • What are the different statuses on the posters, and what do each of them mean? There’s 3 different statuses on the poster Open, Acknowledged, and closed. They mean different things for example Open means its public for people to view and then either do something about it or at least take the time to figure out the problem. Acknowledged is basically the figuring out the problem part which means that someone who can fix the problem may have looked at the problem but need more information about that. Closed means that the issue has been looked at, it’s being solved, and maybe even getting fixed.
  • Describe what you did (or what you were supposed to do) to find out if the issue you submitted to SeeClickFix was fixed. What I did to see if my issue was fixed or not was by going to the sight SeeClickFix.com to see if my issue was Open, Acknowledged, or closed.
  • What changes do you notice from the April 13th posters to the April 27th posters? I notice from April 13th and April 27th people’s issues on that poster has been acknowledged more. I also notice that some people’s are even being closed.
  • Do you think there are any types of issues SeeClickFix is better at getting fixed than others?  Why do you think that? I do think SeeClickFix are better at getting issues fixed better than others because it makes people open up to see the things that are happening in the community and how it looks when their Downtown vs High st.
  • If an issue someone reported did not get fixed, what is something they might try next? If someone issue isn’t fixed they can keep trying or find another issue. They also can try to fix that issue themselves if SeeClickFix don’t want to do something about it.
  • Do you think people who report issues to SeeClickFix are able to gain agency?  Explain your answer. I do think people gain agency from the issues they report on SeeClickFix because people are seeing that the issue can be making the certain parts of Oakland horrible when people don’t want that especially the mayor. Someone with privilege is gonna say something about these issues so they can get fixed and having Oakland looking it’s best.

Research Assignment #2- Embed a Map

Occupy Oakland started based of the death of Oscar Grant that’s when there was a plaza named after him that was originally named Ogawa Plaza. There was a generally strike that shut down port Oakland. Law enforcement didn’t like the things Occupy Oakland were doing because there is a powerful message and Law enforcement tried to stop them. I think this is in a category of Level of Oppression which is Interpersonal because people protesting and naming a place after Oscar Grant based off the death done by the Bart police. This story was placed in Oakland, CA in front of Oakland city hall. This story happened in October 2011.

African American Oscar Grant 22 years old was tryna get on bart on New Year’s Day that’s  when Bart police came and tried to see who were the a in a fight that had broke out earlier. They saw Oscar and though he was apart of it and that’s when they put  Oscar on the ground. The white male police put a pistol to Oscar back and “accidentally” shot Mr.Grant.  I think this is a system of Society Oppression because the police didn’t have no type of relationship with Oscar which means he didn’t care about him living so he thought that he can stop oscar from resisting with a taser, but he grabbed his gun instead and  he shot him. This story happened New Years day at 2:15 a.m. The bart where Oscar was murdered and on bart was  Fruitvale Bart.

  • In your own words describe what the company called SEECLICKFIX does for people living in Oakland.

SEECLICKFIX supports the people in Oakland by fixing anything they need or issues they have because most of their problems have something to do with the damage in Oakland.

  • Do you think SEECLICKFIX helps people in Oakland to resist oppression?  Explain why, or why not.

I don’t  think SEECLICKFIX helps resist oppression because they’re trying to solve issues of others in the community in a manner that’s not violent or helping harm anybody.

  • Explain the story of how you took your picture for the SEECLICKFIX project (Describe what you took a picture of, when you took it, where you were, how, and why).

Assignment #9

To begin with females and males never got paid the same amount of wage as male especially if they were another race is level of oppression which is Economic because males always got paid more than females and money is something that everyone needs to survive in this world, so if their is inequality going on based on someone race or gender then its making someone get less which is the women in this situation.  I got this document from a source created by The United States Department Labor, which is the government agency that keeps track of all the people working in that country. This was made in 2009. According to the document “Asian men get paid $952 and Asian women  gets paid $779.” This shows how people experience different Levels of Oppression which is Economic because the law thinks that females need to get paid less than males do based on their gender or race which can mean that the law values men more than women.

Second of all nobody even remembered who Emmett Till was until this women confessed that what she said about his doings was a lie that has to do with level of oppression which is Interpersonal Oppression because the women who accused young Emmett till of harassing her finally committed to him not doing anything to her, but whistle that gotten Emmet beaten, shot, and killed by the women family. I got this information from document from a quote in the article from New York times Newspapers website. The article is called “Woman Linked to 1955 Emmett Till Murder Tells Historian Her Claims Were False” and it was written by Richard Perez-Peña on January 27, 2017.  According to the document “allegations that Emmett grabbed her and was menacing and sexually crude toward her, “that part is not true.” This shows this is Interpersonal Oppression because this woman felt rage and anger towards Emmett Till cause of his color complexion which she felt the need to lie on him and say he did terrible things to her, so from him whistling at her put him in a very harmful position that he didn’t want to be in which caused him his life.

Assignment #8

Power is the ability to control events and behaviors of people. For example power is the government taking over homes to build a prison. Marginalize is putting something off to the side, or make less important. For example people not caring about homeless people. Exploit is taking advantage of someone for your own benefits. For example picking on someone who didn’t do anything to you but you feel great about it. People with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities by taking down schools just to build jails or etc. Christopher Columbus colonized Native Americans marginalizing them by not caring about their land when he came and took over. Columbus also exploited the Natives by beating them if he didn’t get any gold and letting his men do horrible things to these innocent people.

To begin with the colonization with Native Americans all started in West India in 1503 people Natives were marginalized by people with power by going into the “Encomienda”system because they were kidnapped and helpless. According to the document it says “The Spanish government  always insisted that Native Americans were free citizens who must be treated humanely in practice that were bought and sold, worked literally to the death, and forced into virtual slavery.” This shows that the Spanish exploited the Native Americans by manipulating their mind and making them work till they can’t because the Spanish didn’t want to work themselves they also, wanted to gain power just by taking them from their homes and torching the Natives. The document is about the Spanish making a system to capture the Native American for their own benefits. This document was created in 1994 from a book called” Colonial America” written by Jerome R. Reich.

Second of all Black people’s social class never was cared for because the appraiser with power marginalized them by not helping black people get eligible for Federal Housing Administration Insurance. There’s this housing system that have green areas and red areas. The green area is for the white rich people and the red area is for the poor black people. The black people can’t be in the green area because the boss out of all the white people in that area don’t want the black people in their area. The white people and the appraiser (leader) looked at them  as if they had the flu or was sick. This is based off a document from an article on a news website called “The case for Respirations” off the site The Atlantic. This was made by Ta-Nahesi Coates written in June 2014. In the appraiser eyes “Neither the percentage of black people living there nor social class mattered. Black people were viewed as a contagion.” This shows the appraiser didn’t care about black people knowing black people were put into a low social class all cause of their skin color which makes it a struggle for them because they have to dress differently, eat differently, get fewer jobs, and get thought of differently all cause of the social class they were forced in which is messed up knowing they were marginalized.

Lastly people took to much of their energy to put into their  Tezcatlipoca before themselves. People were worried about Tezcatlipoca which became a god after becoming a seasoned warrior because they wanted to change him into that. They made sure nothing happened to him. This document was created by a seventeen year old Aztec scribe records his impressions of a Sacrifice Ritual  which was recorded and told several years later in 1529. According to the source “Tezcatlipoca, can have no blemish upon his body, and he is treated like our most royal family member during the long year leading sacrifice.” This shows how much the Aztecs were trying to make sure Tezcatlipoca perfect so they can sacrifice him. The person that was being exploited was Tezcatlipoca because his body parts were taken off bit by bit which can be traumatizing. He shouldn’t  be considered god to them when he’s dead because he should already be considered a god alive.  This is an example of Economic System because the Aztecs gave Tezcatlipoca their food, suites, money, massages, and anything he wanted as long as he was treated like a king.

Assignment #6

What is something that you learned about Christopher Columbus that  you did not know before?

I learned about Christopher Columbus in 8th grade so there isn’t nothing I learned. I can say that when I first learned  about Christopher Columbus I learned that he was very selfish and didn’t care about anything else but gold. He exploited people because he knew that he had power over them and more privilege.  He figured out the world wasn’t flat but he wasn’t in india. He’s a very disrespectful person that all hate can explain.

Do think Christopher Columbus deserves his own holiday?  Explain your answer.

Christopher Columbus doesn’t deserve his own holiday because the things he did to the Native Americans isn’t no where near okay. He doesn’t deserve his own country neither. Christopher Columbus did things to people who were innocent and try to offer him everything without being forced. No one wants to feel like their forced to do anything and they were.  He is very wrong for the things he did to the Native Americans they deserve their own holiday not him.
